June Writing Challenge Wrap-up

Last Sunday marked the end of my June Writing Challenge. Though I didn’t write as much as I’d hoped, I still wrote 21,680 words during the month of June, which is pretty exciting! My third Northwoods Barista mystery is now nearly complete, with about sixty thousand words. I have a few minor issues to wrap up and some revision and editing to do, of course, but the book is well on its way. Hooray!
I've made a few discoveries...

Write Early, Write Caffeinated:
I've mentioned it earlier, but I realized that writing early in the day worked well. Writing with caffeine helped even more. If I wrote in the evening, I was not as creative, and I felt like it was more of a chore to complete before I could collapse into bed. Summer is an exciting time for me to be creative, with school out and spending time going on adventures with my two kiddos. But chasing two small people on a playground or at a waterpark out in the sun can take my energy right out some days and doesn't leave much for the evening.

Community Support:
I know I benefit when I have a community of writers alongside me. That was one great advantage of the time I participated in NaNoWriMo: I had the community alongside me on the site and on Twitter, and people were encouraging each other daily. Another place where I felt a lot of encouragement to write was grad school: all of my fellow writers were eagerly sharing amazing and diverse writing. That alone was inspiration enough to write whatever I felt I had to put on paper. In the future, I want to build more community among my friends who are writers and on Twitter and other platforms to keep myself motivated.

             Just Be:
Sometimes, when I write, I feel pressure that I’m not doing things the “right way”, that I need to be submitting my writing to journals, chasing after agents, publishing everything, and marketing myself non-stop. I do realize these things are helpful, especially if I want to make creative writing more of a career and to build a reputation. I do dream of such a day, occasionally, but sometimes, writing is just a way to relax. The school year is so busy—sometimes I wonder how I manage to juggle two teaching jobs, two kids, and keeping the house from looking like a tornado went through (well, some days...). I think part of the reason I can survive the school year is that I make sure I take the time to relax and recover in the summer. I will actually ignore my email for a while. I will sit on the back porch with a glass of iced coffee or lemonade. I will go camping with my family and roast s’mores over a bonfire. I’ll go for a walk or bike ride without a set destination. And I will write what I want to write just for the hell of it.

June Writing Challenge! (Because November is a busy month for teachers…)

I’ve started my 2nd Annual June Writing Challenge, with the goal of writing at least 500 words each day of June. So far, I’ve been relatively successful. Unfortunately, I did miss one day—yes, already!

However, I’m remaining optimistic, especially since I’ve had high word counts some of my other days.

Here are my current stats:
Sat: 598
Sun: 1358
Mon: 0
Tues: 1887
Wed: 514
Thurs: 1828

My observations so far…

I write better in the morning, especially with a caffeinated beverage at my side. If I wait until the end of the day when my kids are asleep, I feel groggy and have a tougher time being creative with my word choice.

It’s not just about the word count, but also about the quality of the words. This may seem obvious, but, of course, quantity is always easier to measure, so it’s what we tend to work with. I know that, as I looked back on my words from Saturday night, they weren’t as interesting as what I pulled together on Sunday or Tuesday mornings when I was more alert and in a more creative state of mind.

Using an author’s beat list has been a great help! I’ve re-read what I had of my story last month and created a beat list to help guide me the rest of the way through my mystery novel. Using the list as a guide, I know what main action will take place in each scene and chapter, and it’s been a valuable way to not only keep me organized but also keep me inspired when I’m not sure quite where to start.

Please feel free to join me if you’re wanting to challenge yourself to get more words on paper this summer!

Summer Writing Warm-up

As I continue my busy school-year life with two teaching jobs and two small kiddos, I can't help but look forward to the summer. Summer means one very special word: WRITING!

I miss Jordy, Sam, their general caffeinated chaos, and my fictional version of Eagle River. I'm looking forward to returning to that world full time for my second annual June Writing Challenge! Writers out there, you're welcome to join me. We write every day in June, and it is marvelous.

Last week, I attended a writing conference in Green Bay called Untitled Town. It's a newer festival, but they are growing and really seem to be drawing quite the crowd! I was heartened by the large turn-out, taking in the writer-packed atmosphere. I had the opportunity to meet and shake hands with Patricia Skalka, author of the Door County Mystery series that inspired me to set Decaf & Drones near my hometown in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. I felt very inspired by the many talks and workshops, and it gave me the boost I need as we near the summer months and I begin my "writing season" (as opposed to my "teaching season").

Jordy's third adventure is her craziest yet, in which she and Sam find themselves involved in both a local cold case and a possibly haunted resort. Our heroines face more danger and suspects than in both of the previous books, and I'm looking forward to tying it all together as I move from outline/freewrites to "beat list" (a new term I learned at the conference!) to finished novel. The tentative release date for the as-of-yet-unnamed 3rd book in the series will be late fall. I will be updating this blog more frequently in the summer, and I hope you join me along the journey.
